Agatized Dinosaur Bone

Agatized dinosaur bone, often called gem bone, is a remarkable fossil material formed when the original organic material of dinosaur bone was gradually replaced by silica and other minerals over millions of years. This mineralization can preserve the bone’s original cellular structure, creating the distinctive webbed, honeycomb, and mosaic-like patterns visible in each cabochon.

Much of the highly prized gem-quality dinosaur bone used in lapidary work comes from the American West, particularly Utah and Colorado, where fossilized remains from the Jurassic period can date back more than 140 million years.

Every piece is completely unique, with natural variations in color, cell structure, and mineralization. Reds, browns, blacks, creams, yellows, and occasional blues or greens can occur depending on the minerals present during fossilization.

Our cabochons are individually hand-cut and polished in our studio, allowing us to orient each stone to showcase the best natural pattern and character of this extraordinary prehistoric material.
