1814 Spain Copper 4 Quartos – Barcelona

An original 1814 copper 4 Quartos coin minted in Barcelona, Spain, during a period of significant political upheaval and transition. Issued at the conclusion of the Peninsular War (1808–1814), this coin represents a fascinating chapter in Spanish history as the country emerged from years of conflict and French occupation under Napoleon Bonaparte.

Struck in copper, this denomination measures approximately 29 mm in diameter, weighs 9.2 grams, and has a thickness of 1.5 mm with a reeded edge. The obverse features a distinctive stylized heraldic design associated with Barcelona, while the reverse prominently displays the denomination 4 QUARTOS within a circular border, accompanied by the inscription EN BARCELONA and the date 1814.

Cataloged as KM#67, this issue is associated with engraver Mariano González Sepúlveda. The example pictured exhibits considerable circulation wear, aged copper patina, surface oxidation, and softened details, while retaining its recognizable design and denomination.

A wonderful surviving piece of early 19th-century Spanish history, this coin offers a tangible connection to Barcelona during one of Europe’s most turbulent periods, when the Napoleonic Wars were reshaping the political landscape of the continent
