1797 Bolivia Silver ½ Real – Charles IV – Potosí Mint
An original 1797 Spanish Colonial silver ½ Real coin, minted in Potosí, in present-day Bolivia, during the reign of King Charles IV of Spain (1788–1808). Struck in .896 fine silver, this coin measures approximately 15.6 mm in diameter, weighs 1.69 grams, and features a reeded edge.
The obverse depicts the portrait of Charles IV with the Latin inscription CAROLUS IIII DEI GRATIA (Charles IV, by the Grace of God). The reverse displays the crowned Spanish royal coat of arms between the Pillars of Hercules, accompanied by the inscription HISPAN ET IND R (King of Spain and the Indies).
Cataloged as KM#69, this issue had a reported mintage of 277,848 coins. The example pictured exhibits considerable circulation wear, surface marks, and age-related character consistent with its long history. A fascinating piece of Spanish Colonial history dating to the late 18th century.
